What is Pelvic Pain?

September 11, 2012

Pelvic pain most often occurs in the lower abdomen area.  Considered chronic if the pain lasts six months or more, the source of pelvic pain is often difficult to diagnose.  While underlying infection may be the cause of some cases of pelvic pain, Dr. McDonald has found the vast majority of cases of pelvic pain are not organ-based, but neuropathic.

Female patients with pelvic pain present a difficult problem for the health care team.

  1. The gynecologist approaches the pain as organ disease, focusing primarily on the uterus fallopian tubes or ovaries.
  2. The same pain is treated by the pain medicine specialist who has a restricted ability to perform pelvic examinations and is generally less familiar with the anatomy of the pelvis.
  3. Patients delay seeing a doctor for pelvic or perineal pain until it is unbearable because they are embarrassed to seek medical advice regarding their sexual organs.

At Pacific Pelvic Pain Center, Dr. McDonald actively listens to every patient suffering with pelvic pain.  With extensive training in both Gynecology and Anesthesiology, Dr. McDonald is expert at identifying the source of pelvic pain and treating it effectively.
